Next up in our weekly cosplayer interviews is up and coming cosplayer Red Rose Cosplay. Poissbly best known for her Catwoman cosplays, Red Rose Cosplay has some serious talent and is worth of a follow. See what she has to say about her cosplaying adventures below, and who doesn’t love Catwoman?
Cosplayer: Red Rose Cosplay
Location: Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada
SMC: Why did you start cosplaying?
As a kid, I always had a huge interest in comic books, video games, and manga. As a teenager, I started to model locally but found the restraints and demands of runaway and catalog modeling, to be too much and I wanted to branch out. After college, when a friend introduced me into the cosplay world, I was amazed at how expressive and inclusive it could be! The first time, I put on my New 52 Catwoman cosplay, I felt amazing and knew that Cosplay had been exactly what I was looking for.
SMC: What was the first convention you attended in cosplay?
My first convention was Anime Revolution in the Summer of 2017. I threw together a quick Poison Ivy cosplay, that didn’t even fit me right but still managed to have a great time and meet awesome new people.
SMC: What has been your most memorable convention moment?
I’ve had lots of memorable convention moments but one that stands outs was actually my first time cosplaying Catwoman. In the vendor hall, I women ran up to me with tears in her eyes because she loved my Catwoman cosplay so much and wanted a hug. Of course, it was a little strange but it also made me feel happy, that I was able to cosplay my favorite comic book character and others loved her just as much as I did.
SMC: What is your favorite thing about cosplaying at a convention?
Getting to step into a totally different character than yourself and actually becoming that character for the day. Oh, and course, meeting and getting to hang out with other awesome cosplayers!
SMC: Where can fans expect to see you next? (2019/20 Schedule?)
My next con will be Fan Expo Vancouver at the beginning of March! Shortly after, I will attending Emerald City Comic Con on the Sunday and will be introducing my newest Catwoman Cosplay from Batman: The Animated Series.
SMC: What cosplayers inspire you?
I am really inspired by my boyfriend (@khaynbloodstorm) who creates cosplays with me and does awesome foam work. He is still learning, (like I am) but he always finds a way to make a cosplay work. I am also inspired by cosplay crew (@aliferouxs, @laverguenxa) and so many more amazing cosplayers in my community.
SMC: Which is your favorite cosplay you’ve created?
This is a tough one! I’d have to say it’s a tie between my New 52 Catwoman and my Balent Style Catwoman. I love wearing both suits! Each of them represents such a different side and style of Selina Kyle.
SMC: What cosplay are you best known for?
I think my New 52 Catwoman is most popular and since it was my first Catwoman cosplay, I’ve worn it the most!
SMC: If money was no object what would be your dream cosplay creation?
Twilight Princess Zelda for sure! Twilight Princess is honestly one of my favorite games and Zelda’s dress and armor in the game is breathtaking. I’m hoping one day to do it justice!
SMC: Do you have any new cosplays currently in the works?
Yes! Right now, I’m working on Catwoman from Batman: The Animated Series! After that, I’m looking to start a Pokemon cosplay and perhaps another Bulma cosplay from DBZ!
SMC: What are your cosplay strengths? (Tailoring, fabric painting, worbla armor, in-character performance etc.)
I still have a lot to learn but I’d say one of my ‘strengths’ would be, attention to detail and trying to make my characters realistic. I have a lot to learn in the armor making category and hope to improve my sewing skills. I feel with my background in modeling, photo shoots, and character posing come more natural to me and I honestly adore shooting.
SMC: What’s one thing you wish you knew about cosplaying before you got started?
Honestly, I wish I knew how much it would cost. Even though I love cosplaying so much, it’s important to budget properly and be realistic with how much materials cost.
SMC: Any advice for people interested in cosplaying for the first time?
I would tell them to first attend a con and meet some friends who cosplay. I feel like having a good crew for advice and support is key! I would also suggest, they make a budget plan and get started early on costume building. For me, stress before a con does not go over well and I’m not a fan of con crunching.
SMC: What is something your fans may not know about you? Other hobbies?
I’m pretty boring outside of cosplay. I love to bake and also binge watch t.v with my furbabies (Two dogs, two cats) and my boyfriend.
SMC: What part of “geekdom” is you favorite avenue of entertainment (i.e. comics, movies, video games, anime, etc?).
How can I choose!? Honestly, I love them all. If I had to choose, I would say that comic books are my favorite. I have way too many graphic novels and comics to count! I also really enjoy reading cheesy, romance manga and I spend a lot of my evenings, nose deep in a good manga.
Anime and Video games are close seconds in my heart. I love binge watching an action-packed anime with boyfriend, or spending my free time playing Legend of Zelda of Warcraft.
