SMC Presents: E3 2018: Best Cosplay Ideas

E3 2018

E3 2018 was another giant success for the Video Game industry with many high profile game announcements made and enjoyed by fans all over the world. While we’re certainly hardcore gamers here at SMC, one thing we’re always interested in, is new cosplay. With new game announcements & a slew of new sequels that means one thing… new cosplay ideas. Check out some of our favorite new and improved characters coming to cosplay near you in 2018 and beyond.

Gears of Wars 5’s Kait

E3-2018-Kait

Like everyone else, we were surprised to see the first reveal of Gears of Wars 5 at Microsoft’s press conference this year. One thing that stood out was that Kait now appears to be the central character the story will follow. This means one thing for us, crank up the armor factory as we can only assume this will lead to a lot of eva foam, worbla and LED’s to make some truly amazing COG armor. As a self proclaimed xbox fanboy (I know, I’m sorry), I for one am really looking forward to the onslaught of armor and large guns coming to the cosplay community over the next couple of years.

Assassins Creed Odyssey – Alexios / Kassandra

E3-2018-AC

While a release of a new Assassin’s Creed game had been rumored for a while preceding E3 2018, fans were unsure what would happen as UBISOFT had previously mentioned that the series was no longer a yearly event. That being said, the unveiling of Odyssey went off with a hitch, unveiling the new Greek setting. Cosplayers from around the world now get to work with either a male (Alexios) or female (Kassandra) lead from the game, and we all know that these will be mainstays in the community for a long time to come.

Devil May Cry 5 – Nero

E3-2018-Nero

The long overdue sequel to DMC4 made a surprise guest appearance on Microsoft’s stage this year. Once expected to be a PlayStation exclusive, Capcom’s Devil May Cry 5 is officially a multi-platform game for all fans to enjoy. With a slew of interesting characters being shown in the trailer, one can only assume Nero will be making an epic return to the convention floor very soon. Add in Dante and Nero’s sidekick Nico, fans can expect many upcoming group shots for this band of heroes.

Last of Us Part II – Ellie

E3-2018-Ellie

By far one of Sony’s biggest franchises in the last few years. People have been patiently waiting for the return of “Last of Us 2”. While an Ellie cosplay certainly wouldn’t be as flashy as some of the other characters on this list, we’re expecting a lot of Ellie cosplay. People love the character of Ellie and want her to survive at all costs. One can imagine that Ellie would be a very simple yet effective “Closet Cosplay” that could be easily pulled together in a pinch before a convention. Combine this with some effective makeup skills and the convention-going crowds will be very pleased with your Last of us 2 tribute.

Kingdom Hearts 3 – Sora

E3-2018-Sora

E3 was full of games that were finally making a triumphant return to the gaming community. Kingdom Hearts 3 was one of these games. Being in development for the last several years, Sora and his gang of Disney friends are truly fan favorites and one would expect cosplays in the future. To really capture Sora one must master the hair (i.e. The Wig). In this case, the hair makes the character (and cosplay). While we don’t necessarily expect too many straight cosplays of Mickey, Donald or Goofy, there may be room for some possible Genderbends, Mashups or simply some new in-game costumes that make it to all of our Instagram cosplay feeds.

Shadow of a Tomb Raider – Lara Croft

E3-2018-Lara

It’s hard to hold back my personal excitement for Lara’s newest adventure. Being my personal favorite series from this generation, the idea of Lara Croft on the convention floor or flooding your social media feed will never go away. Lara will for sure have several key new looks for this latest release, and I, for one, can’t wait to see the community start turning them out; the more, the better. You can never have too much Lara. Square Enix has done an awesome job of creating such atmosphere around truly iconic character. A true masterpiece.

Resident Evil 2 Remake – Leon Kennedy

E3-2018-Leon

With the revival of the Resident Evil 2 Remake on Sony’s E3 stage this year, will we see an increase of Leon cosplay? Videogamers / Cosplayers certainly love the world that Capcom has created for them throughout the Resident Evil games. While the Umbrella Corporation will often be represented by cosplays, will Raccoon Cities police force make a come back? One can expect with the pure love that the RE2 Remake has seen at E3 that Leon and a few of his zombie friends will see a resurgence. Will the mysterious Mister X return as well? Only time will tell.

Dead or Alive 6 – Kasumi (and Gang)

E3-2018-Kasumi

Tecmo is back and with another iteration of their flagship Dead or Alive series. When you look at cosplay potential, fighting games lead the pack. There are normally so many characters compared to your standard Action Adventure / First Person Shooter game. Temco are the masters of wacky character creation and there will, for sure, be a ton of new content (characters & costumes) to potentially work into upcoming cosplay plans. If you watched the new trailer, you would have already noticed Kasumi is back with an all new look. We can’t wait!

RPG’s Everywhere!

While doing this article, one thing we noticed was that most of the characters listed above were all from returning series. Since E3 had numerous game announcements, we certainly didn’t want to leave out the new guys and the pure cosplay potential each series has to offer. Most of these games are RPG based where you will create your own character. This leads to one thing…. Amazing Group cosplays!

  • Fallout 76
  • Anthem
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • The Division 2
  • Rage 2

More to Discover

E3 seen some newer projects finally released to the public to gaze upon and wondering what lies ahead. Games like From Software’s Shadows Die Twice, Kojima Productions Death Stranding and 343’s Halo Infinite are all games that offered early looks, but as customers we’re not truly sure what we’re going to get at the moment, only time will tell if new cosplays are born from these games.

Think of the potential awesomeness that is possible when navigating the floors of such conventions as SDCC, NYCC or Fan Expo Canada.

E3 2018 has come and gone, but the impact on the cosplay community as a whole will last a long time. Video games are responsible for a large part of the cosplays we see and enjoy every year. I’m sure, as we are writing this article and publishing it, there are already many cosplayers planning their next creation based on something they like and seen at E3 2018.

We can’t wait until next year where there will surely be even more adventures as we head into the next generation of hardware with more sequels and new games heading our way.
