SMC: Why did you start cosplaying?
Tina Spirals: I started for a lot of reasons, and everyday i find more reasons to love cosplaying. A big reason is because I love seeing characters that mean so much to me, come to life. For me, fictional characters have always been alive in my fantasies, so it magical to see them before me at a convention; plus I love being a part of the wonderful community. It’s so much fun meeting people with similar passions as you; fun is the main reason why I cosplay!
SMC: What was the first convention you cosplay’d?
Tina Spirals: The first convention I cosplayed at was G-Anime.
SMC: What do you think of the Cosplay scene in Ottawa (Canada’s Capital)
Tina Spirals: The cosplay scene in Ottawa is absolutely phenomenal; so full of crazy talented cosplayers who are also amazing people! The Ottawa cosplay community is very warm, welcoming, and inclusive. Everyone I’ve met through cosplay and convention going has been unyieldingly kind, and I am continuously grateful for it!
SMC: What has been your most memorable convention moment?
Tina Spirals: My most memorable convention moment was meeting Brent Spiner! I’ll never forget our awkward handshake.
Tina Spirals: My favourite thing about cosplaying at conventions is the feeling you get; you feel like you’re a part of the event rather than just an attendee. Also being in costume gets me to interact and talk to people; where in my everyday life I struggle with socializing.
SMC: Where can fans expect to see you next? (2015 Schedule?)
Tina Spirals: The next convention I’ll be attending will be Fan Expo Toronto as well as Edmonton Expo shortly after. I’m really looking forward to these events a lot!
SMC: What cosplayers inspire you?
Tina Spirals: There are so many amazing cosplayers that inspire me.
SMC: Which is your favorite cosplay you’ve created?
Tina Spirals: I love all my cosplays equally! Every costume has a different challenge, and forces me to learn something new. I’m really proud I finished my Totoro bunny suit in time for MCC. I had only ever hand sewed costumes before then and pulled an all-nighter learning how to use a sewing machine before the convention.
SMC: What cosplay are you best known for?
Tina Spirals: I’m actually not sure which cosplay I’m best known for; all of them I hope!
SMC: If money was no object what would be your dream cosplay creation?Tina Spirals: If money was no object, my dream cosplay would be Amora the Enchantress or Nui Harime.
SMC: How did you get involved with Cos Culture Magazine?
Tina Spirals: I became involved with Cos Culture Magazine through Nikko Marie; the beautiful, talented and down to earth editor of the magazine.
SMC: What does being a member of their Street Team involve?
Tina Spirals: Being a member of the ‘Street Team’ for the magazine can involve providing photos, interviews, blog posts, and/or social media updates during conventions. I look forward to representing the magazine as a member of the ‘Street Team’ at future conventions!
SMC: Do you have any new cosplays currently in the works?
Tina Spirals: Yes, I’m currently working on two new Poison Ivy costumes, as well as a special Christmas costume!
SMC: What are your cosplay strengths? (Tailoring, fabric painting, worbla armor, in-character performance etc.)
Tina Spirals: That’s hard to say, I’m not very skilled at too many things. Can positivity be a cosplay strength? If not I got pretty good at hand embroidery for my Nick Ramos cosplay.
SMC: Any advice for people interested in cosplaying for the first time?
Tina Spirals: Some advice I would give someone cosplaying for the first time would be not to be afraid. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Don’t be afraid to cosplay something that isn’t your race, body type, species etc. Lastly have fun. Cosplay should always be fun.
SMC: What is something your fans may not know about you? Other hobbies?
Tina Spirals: Something people may not know about me is that I love big cats and exotic animals. I’m also obsessed with thift shopping and collecting VHS tapes.
SMC: Any favorite TV shows, movies and cartoons?
Tina Spirals: My favourite T.V. shows are Star Trek: TNG and Supernatural. My favourite movies are Gattaca, Alien, Aliens, Star Wars Original Trilogy, and The Duchess. My favourite cartoons/animes are Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Inuyasha, and Parasyte.
