SMC: Why did you start cosplaying?
Lily On the Moon: I started cosplaying because I used to be a shy teenager, who lived in her friends’ shadows. To me, cosplay was a way to be someone else, just for a weekend, to escape reality. Years after, it is now my main passion and it helped me go through my teenage years, and to really found who I am!
SMC: What was the first convention you cosplay’d?
Lily On the Moon: It was Paris Manga, in 2009
SMC: What has been your most memorable convention moment?
Lily On the Moon: I think it was when I attend MCM comic con last May with my boyfriend. I was doing a photoshoot, when 3 girls came at me, nearly crying, asking for a selfie and complimenting my work. I was so shocked to be recognized in an other country, that I was as shy as they were ! It was a beautiful moment
SMC: What is your favorite thing about cosplaying at a convention?
Lily On the Moon: It depends on many things! If I attend a convention with a brand new cosplay, I will tell you « My favorite thing is to make a loooots of photoshoots ! » But if I go with an old cosplay, I will answer « Meet my friends and have fun with them » And finally, when I cosplay to other countries, it would be « Meeting new people from all over the world ! »
Recently my favorite things is to make videos for my Just Cosplay Things project with my friend Omaru. We make short stories about some stuffs that happen to cosplayers ! It really helped me to go through this bad year
SMC: Where can fans expect to see you next? (2016/2017 Schedule?)
Lily On the Moon: For the moment I was thinking Paris Comic Con in October, because I couldn’t go last year and I want to have a look a this 2nd edition
I would really really love to come back to MCM London in the end of October, but I’m not sure to be able to afford it…
And probably Paris Manga in November, but mostly to make Just Cosplay Things videos I think.
SMC: What cosplayers inspire you?
Lily On the Moon: Those who can play with makeup ! Those who stay humble despite their notoriety ! Those who keep their head up even when negativity and jealousy try to put them down… Those who remind me that it is a wonderful passion that we should share all together to enjoy it even more
SMC: Which is your favorite cosplay you’ve created?
Lily On the Moon: I have many favorites, but it changed every time people ask me this question. I used to be very proud of Astrid from How To Train Your Dragon 2, but now I’ll say Ciri from The Witcher 3. I worked very hard on it and felt proud when I saw the photos. I love this character so much, that it was an honor to become her for a day!
SMC: What cosplay are you best known for?
Lily On the Moon: It started all with my Juliet Starling from Lollipop Chainsaw, when people started to recognize me saying « Oh you’re the girl who did Juliet Starling right ? »
Years after, my friends Omaru, Lexi and I did a silly Frozen video, that happens to get 30 million views on Youtube, and people on the social medias told me they came from there, I was cosplaying Elsa.
Nowadays, I got more « Oh, you’re the blond girl from Just Cosplay Things » than « Oh, you’re Lily on the Moon » !
SMC: If money was no object what would be your dream cosplay creation?
Lily On the Moon: Easy ! It would be Ariel from The Little Mermaid, with a full silicone tail ! A childhood dream !
SMC: Do you have any new cosplays currently in the works?
Lily On the Moon: I’m the kind of cosplayer who always work an many cosplays at the same time.
I currently work on Jean Grey and Cyclops from the last X-Men movie, I’m re-making my Ariel cosplay, and also making Cinderella’s peasant outfit
SMC: What are your cosplay strengths? (Tailoring, fabric painting, worbla armor, in-character performance etc.)
Lily On the Moon: For the making part, I’m very good at improvisation. Most of the time, I’m in a « I have no idea what I am doing » mode, and things tend to end up pretty well
As I have a a round face and big fishy eyes, I can also handle Disney princesses faces pretty well, I always got more compliments as a Disney princess than in a badass character
SMC: What’s one thing you wish you knew about cosplaying before you got started?
Lily On the Moon: It wouldn’t be so much into the sewing part, but more in the human part. If I could go back to the 15 years old Ophélie, I would tell myself:
« Make the difference between those who want to be friend with Ophélie or those who want to be friends with Lily on the Moon. Carefull to the profiteers, jealous people are the worst and they’ll try to pull you down to feel superior. Ignorance is the best solution, be nice with the people who deserve it but don’t trust too many people. »
SMC: Any advice for people interested in cosplaying for the first time?
Lily On the Moon: Go for it ! If you don’t know how to sew, you can buy to start, and learn ! I spend all my weekend on the sewing machine, failing and trying again for years, and now it feels so good to wear something I made myself. Don’t be affraid to fail, we all do. Be proud of what you can do, and get better with years !
SMC: What do you do in the real world for a job?
Lily On the Moon: I am a makeup artist, I do beauty, SFX, weddings, TV and web-TV show, private shooting and all kind of makeup-related stuffs
SMC: What is something your fans may not know about you? Other hobbies?
Lily On the Moon: I don’t know, maybe that I love to travel ? If I could afford it, I’ll go all around the world !
Beside that, I also draw a lot ! Before makeup, I was about to become an illustrator, and even if sewing takes a lot of place in my life, it is always a pleasure to take some time to draw
SMC: What part of “geekdom” is you favorite avenue of entertainment (i.e. comics, movies, video games, anime, etc?).
Lily On the Moon: DISNEYYYYY ahem, sorry. Yep, Disney. And movies, and comics, and videogrames, but mostly Disney haha
SMC: What Comic Books are you currently addicted to?
Lily On the Moon: I’m trying to read all the Spider-Gwen related comics I can found, but it is not easy in France ! There are a few local store where you can found them in English, but I keep buying them everytime I found one I don’t have and, not comic books but I am currently reading all the « The Witcher » novels, by Andrzej Sapkowski. I’m totally addicted!
SMC: Any favorite TV shows, movies or cartoons?
Lily On the Moon:
Favorite TV show: Game of Thrones !! I’m a very original person I know.
Favorite movies: Forrest Gump, Love Actually and Moulin Rouge.
Cartoons: … DISNEYYYYYY !! (oh, and not Disney too like Anastasia or How to train your Dragon ^^)
Editor: A big thanks to Lily for doing this interview with us. By far one of the fastest turn arounds we’ve ever had. Great job!
