SMC: Why did you start cosplaying?
KimLaKim: At the time I was pretty much the only person in my town who even knew what cosplay was, I think my parents thought I was going crazy. I don’t know exactly what made me want to start but I was heavily into anime and through research online I discovered cosplay and wanted to give it a go.
SMC: What was the first convention you attended in cosplay?
KimLaKim: My first convention was Supanova Sydney back in 2012. I was 16 at the time and I was cosplaying as Hilda from the Poke’mon games. My costume was practically stuff I pulled from the wardrobe and it was my first time at a convention. I dragged a friend along with me and she came in a Pikachu onsie, I don’t think i ever thought I would get into cosplay as much as I am now LOL.
SMC: What has been your most memorable convention moment?
KimLaKim: My most memorable moment would have to be Supanova 2013. It was my second time cosplaying and I was dressed as my own version of a Sailor Moon cross over with Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony. I spent the whole time crying and fussing over my outfit as my parents drove me to Sydney, everything felt wrong and I thought I looked stupid. As soon as I got out of the car and headed to the con, I was stopped by a photographer for a quick shoot. That was the first time ever I received photos by a photographer and it boosted my confidence so much that I have not stopped cosplaying since.
SMC: What is your favourite thing about cosplaying at a convention?
KimLaKim: I think it would have to be meeting the fans of the character you’re dressed as. In one part it makes me feel cool and that I am the awesome character I’m dressed as. The other best part is needing out with another fan of the show I’m cosplaying from.
SMC: Where can fans expect to see you next? (2016/17 Schedule?)
KimLaKim: I always do Supanova Sydney, SMASH and Oz Comic Con so people can bet on me being there! Other cons will depend on money and if i i can get time off work lol.
SMC: What cosplayers inspire you?
KimLaKim: I think my biggest inspiration is also my best cosplay friend Geek Chic Cosplay (https://www.facebook.com/geekchiccosplays). She works so hard for her craft and balances a work life with her passion in a way I can only aspire to achieve. I am so lucky to have a friend like her in the community.
SMC: Which is your favorite cosplay you’ve created?
KimLaKim: To be honest I am the worst at sowing, I try to either buy all the parts to a costume or commission the whole thing. Occasionally however I have actually made my own costume like my Julie Walker cosplay from The Phantom. It was a lot different from the more anime like cosplays I’ve done, plus the boots made me feel tall.
SMC: What cosplay are you best known for?
KimLaKim: Probably the one from which I’ve based my cosplay name on, Mako from Kill La Kill. Bit of a humble brag but I feel like I smashed it in terms of accuracy and personality!
SMC: If money was no object what would be your dream cosplay creation?
KimLaKim: Oh wow, that’s a toughie… If i could, id like to design a sort of fantasy, armoured version of the Pokemon Gogoat. It would be so cool to turn it into a design based off a satyr and have really cool armour and a massive cape. I am a massive Gogoat fan so i would just love to do my favourite pokemon justice.
SMC: Do you have any new cosplays currently in the works?
KimLaKim: My friends are actually helping me make a Batgirl from Burnside cosplay. I am very fortunate to have patient and talented friends who are willing to help me and show me in regards to sowing machines.
SMC: What are your cosplay strengths? (Tailoring, fabric painting, worbla armor, in-character performance etc.)
KimLaKim: I like to believe I’m pretty gosh darn good at makeup for self taught. Also good at making designs for cosplays… and never bringing them to life, whoops.
SMC: What’s one thing you wish you knew about cosplaying before you got started?
KimLaKim: Don’t worry about being popular or having people wanting to take lots of photos of you at a convention. Dress as something you love and have your own fun 🙂
SMC: Any advice for people interested in cosplaying for the first time?
KimLaKim: Cosplay something you love that makes you feel happy. You will never have a bad time if you do always do that.

SMC: What do you do in the real world for a job? (Be specific as you like)
KimLaKim: If you ask me, i will tell you I am an optical assistant, if you asked someone else they may tell you I’m a self glorified sales assistant in an optometrist.
SMC: What is something your fans may not know about you? Other hobbies?
KimLaKim: I am actually really good at painting. Portraits are my jam and i love using photoshop or watercolours to paint.
SMC: What part of “geekdom” is you favorite avenue of entertainment (i.e. comics, movies, video games, anime, etc?).
KimLaKim: I am going to have to say anime, but I’ve started getting into comics and I see what I’ve been missing out on!
SMC: What Comic Books are you currently addicted to?
KimLaKim: Getting heavy into the series ‘SAGA’, like holy balls it is so good.
SMC: Any favorite TV shows, movies or cartoons?
KimLaKim: There are so many that I am honestly struggling to choose. Please don’t make me choose.
SMC: What is your gaming system of choice?
KimLaKim: Nintendo WiiU, I practically live on it.
SMC: What are you currently playing / upcoming video game releases?
KimLaKim: I am always playing Splatoon, my friends and I have a team called Money Squad and we compete in local competitions 🙂
