SMC: What was the first convention where you cosplayed?
Holly Brooke: I started out BIG! The first convention I cosplayed at was San Diego Comic Con. I have since branched out to conventions all over California.
SMC:What has been your most memorable convention moment that you can remember?
Holly Brooke: Meeting Bruce Timm and having him sign my copy of Mad Love is definitely up there as a top convention moment! I’m still in the process of hunting down Paul Dini.
SMC: What is your favourite thing about cosplaying at conventions?
Holly Brooke: Definitely the kids! Little kids get a kick out of the people in costume, and it is even better when they’re also dressed up! I met the most adorable Squirrel Girl and Captain Marvel at Wizard World Sacramento the other week, and it was one of my favorite moments of the con!
SMC: Related to conventions, where can fans expect to see you next? (Any schedule in particular?)
Holly Brooke: School really interferes with my con schedule, but I can say that I am expecting to be at Big Wow Comic Fest in San Jose next!
Editors note: As of publishing this interview Holly’s next convention appearance will be Fanime Saturday, May 24, 2014.
SMC: What other cosplayers inspire you?
Holly Brooke: I think a lot of people get hung up on Facebook “like” numbers these days, when some of the most inspirational people to me have a relatively modest amount of followers. I really find Twinzik Cosplay’s work to be amazing. Also, Hezachan and Tatto, to name a few that I think deserve lots of love! I also am inspired by some of the bigger names in cosplay including VampyBitMe and Kamui Cosplay.
SMC: Which is your favorite Cosplay’s you’ve created?
Holly Brooke: I almost always like the latest costume I’m working on the best. So this is a constantly changing answer! Right now I am having a lot of fun with Sailor Moon and Black Canary.
SMC: What cosplay are you best known for?
Holly Brooke: I don’t think that I have a trademark costume, or if I do I am oblivious! As of late, my Black Canary has been getting a decent amount of attention.
SMC: If money was no object what would be your dream costume to cosplay
Holly Brooke: I feel like most female cosplayers have the same answer to this question. Varia Suit Samus! I would never take it off!
SMC: What part of “geekdom” is you favorite avenue of entertainment (i.e. comics, movies, video games, anime, etc?)
Holly Brooke: If I can’t count cosplay and conventions, I would say comics. I like going to comic book shops and getting new comics. Plus, I am a collector at heart, so I get an unhealthy amount of joy from collecting anything, including comics!
SMC: What Comic Books are you currently addicted to?
Holly Brooke: I would say Li’l Gotham. I think it was made for me! Batman AND cuteness, it is perfect!
SMC: Any favorite TV shows, movies or cartoons?
Holly Brooke: I’m a big cartoon fan, so pretty much all aspects of entertainment are animated for me. Batman the Animated Series has kind of been my all time favorite TV show, but anyone that knows me has probably picked up on the fact that I speak in Futurama references. I have been watching Adult Swim since the dawn of time, so a lot of those shows are staples for me. Movie wise I am kind of all over the map. I think Lion King still holds the number one spot in my heart, and if you know about my big cat obsession, then this should all make sense!
SMC: Do you have any new cosplays currently in the works?
Holly Brooke: I am in the process of making a Zero Suit Samus for Big Wow, and I am actually sewing some pieces for Bunny Suit Bulma today! I don’t even know where I am wearing Bulma, but I just had to make it!
SMC: Any words for your fans?
Holly Brooke:I wanted to say thank you to everyone that takes any sort of interest in what I do. It’s really nice to be able to express my passion about costuming and receive such an overwhelming amount of support from everybody. You guys are really awesome, and I just wanted to say that I really appreciate you Thank you for everything!
