SMC: Why did you start cosplaying? What was the first convention you attended in cosplay?
AmazonMandy: It was kind of on a dare…every year some friends and I attended a local comic book convention. I loved the joker so they dared me to make my own version of it. I was hooked, it was so much fun! It was really easy to meet people, talk to them, and kids enjoyed it so much!
SMC: What is your favorite thing about cosplaying at a convention?
AmazonMandy: Friends. Definitely getting to see friends from all over the world gathered at one place!
SMC: Where can fans expect to see you next?
AmazonMandy: I will be a guest at Anime North Texas in November!
SMC: Which is your favorite cosplay you’ve created?
AmazonMandy: I’m sure this will always be changing and shifting, but right now I’m really loving my new Armored Wonder Woman. I didn’t expect to love wearing it as much as I do, and kids just go nuts! It’s so fun to wear!
SMC: What cosplay are you best known for?
AmazonMandy: I honestly am not sure…I have a lot of people tell me they found me due to Flemeth, but I think it mostly depends on what each person is a fan of!
SMC: If money was no object what would be your dream cosplay creation?
If I had endless money and time, I’ve always loved the Mondoshawan from the Fifth Element. But honestly even if I had it, I have no idea how I’d get it around!!
SMC: Do you have any new cosplays currently in the works?
AmazonMandy: Always! The three I’m currently working on that I’ve announced are:
The Major (another one!!) from Ghost in the Shell: First Assault
Warrior Cosmos, a Sailor Moon character I’ve cosplayed already but redesigned by the artist NoFlutter (an awesome friend, check he work out!)
Velvet from Odin Sphere
SMC: What are your cosplay strengths? (Tailoring, fabric painting, worbla armor, in-character performance etc.)
AmazonMandy: Spandex, and painting! I love working in spandex, though most cosplayers I know seem to hate it. Also, I love painting, either props or directly on fabric. I always painted on canvas, then owned a business as a painter for a while. Painting is so relaxing to me!
SMC: What’s one thing you wish you knew about cosplaying before you got started?
AmazonMandy: That it’s ok to have confidence and believe in myself. Negative people are unhappy, not to worry about them.
SMC: Any advice for people interested in cosplaying for the first time?
AmazonMandy: Well, the landscape of the hobby has changed so much. I’d tell them to either get into it because they enjoy the hobby and all it entails, or find something else. It will not be a gateway to fame and fortune, as so many delude themselves into thinking.
SMC: What do you do in the real world for a job?
AmazonMandy: Thanks to the encouragement of family and friends, as well as experience owning the previous business mentioned, I’ve been very successful as a cosplayer and commissioner, making gowns, costumes, and custom clothing for anyone interested. I love my business, it’s hard work and long days but it’s so rewarding!
SMC: What part of “geekdom” is you favorite avenue of entertainment (i.e. comics, movies, video games, anime, etc?).
AmazonMandy: I would have to say movies and anime (which I can also sometimes watch while sewing), I have almost no time at all for video games, unfortunately.
SMC: Any favorite TV shows, movies or cartoons?
AmazonMandy: I am a huge Star Wars girl, as well as Aliens, Predator, Pacific Rim (I like monsters!), and other sci-fi. For TV, probably Babylon 5 would be a favorite classic series for me.
Random fact: I was asked to be a model for a fantastic Dark Horse Star Wars comic: Dawn of the Jedi. I was the lead female character and was going to be the first Jedi! Unfortunately it got cancelled when Disney bought Star Wars, but it was SO COOL to get to be a part of the Star Wars universe in my own little way!!
Thank you for the interview, this was so fun!
